Making Gateshead a place where everyone thrives

We’ve made our pledges for a fairer Gateshead, we want to hear yours.

The Council has always been fiercely ambitious for the people of Gateshead, helping it to be a great place to live, work and visit.

Years of cuts in government funding means we can no longer do everything we did in the past, but that does not mean we’ve lost our ambition - we care more than ever.

Every day we hear that people in Gateshead are not coping or are in need. We have too many people out of work, living in poverty and living shorter lives. It’s just not right, this unfairness can’t continue.

Big change is needed and fast. A radical rethink is needed about the way we work as a council, the way we spend the money, the way we work with partners, businesses and the local people in our communities.

We want everyone in Gateshead to be involved in this transformation. We have set out our pledges, do you support them? Please tell us what matters most to you and what you think you can do to make Gateshead a place where everyone thrives.

We pledge to:

  1. Put people and families at the heart of everything we do
  2. Tackle inequality so people have a fair chance
  3. Support our communities to support themselves and each other
  4. Invest in our economy to provide sustainable opportunities for employment, innovation and growth across the borough
  5. Work together and fight for a better future for Gateshead

Councillor Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council, explains the challenges facing the Council and how people in Gateshead can help us to plan for the future.

We’ve had years of austerity and government cuts, it’s not right in Gateshead:

Government grant funding cut in half

5,000 people rely on food banks

9,000 people can’t work because of long term illness

1 in 5 children live in poverty

Women live in good health for just 59 years

Men live in good health for just 57 years

Things have to change.
